Boy was he happy when I followed suit & joined the USMC also.

This was at my graduation from boot camp at Parris Island, SC.  He was a very proud and fit looking 55 year old.

Dad and I discussing all the things I learned at boot camp.  We came to the conclusion that while boot camp wasn't physically as tough as it was in his day, recriuts did learn more.

Jerry Ausband, the editor at The Shelby Daily Star at the time this was written, was a friend and contemporary of dad and wrote the last paragraph as kind of a favor to him.  This was four days after my graduation from boot camp and I was in Shelby on leave.  Several people told me that they read about me in the paper even though our names are not mentioned.

It is Marine Corps tradition for Marines to wish each other "Happy Birthday" on 10 November - the Marine Corps Birthday.  I can't say that I remembered to call every year recently, but I usually did.  In fact I did this more often than calling him on his own birthday.  He really liked it when I did this.

Our entire family in December 1979.  Notice Dad's
USMC lapel pin even though he'd been retired for over 15 years.

After the successes of the four younger children in swimming, Dad took it up himself.  He dominated his age group in masters swimming, winning medals at virtually every meet.  Here he is at age 58 swimming breaststroke.
