Joe DePriest wrote this aritcle based on conversations with several family members.  It was printed in The Charlotte Observer on 28 May 2001 (Memorial Day).
Mr. DePriest did a great job!  Dad would've been proud.
There were some mistakes.
There's no such thing as an ex-Marine.  As the saying goes, "Once a Marine; Always a Marine".   If you asked Dad he'd always say "I am a Marine".
He waited until the late 1980's to start his travels.  He was waiting for Gina (the youngest child) to finish school.  This was after his retirement from Fiber Industries (Celanease).
The picture that he carried with him was of the 5th Marines banner.  The 5th Marine Regiment was a regiment of the 1st Marine Division.  His unit in Korea was 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, H Company.
