Joe DePriest wrote this aritcle based on conversations with several
family members. It was printed in The Charlotte Observer on 28 May 2001 (Memorial Day). |
Mr. DePriest did a great job! Dad would've been proud. |
There were some mistakes. |
There's no such thing as an ex-Marine. As the saying goes, "Once a
Marine; Always a Marine". If you asked Dad he'd always say "I am a Marine". |
He waited until the late 1980's to start
his travels. He was waiting for Gina (the youngest child) to finish
school. This was after his retirement from Fiber Industries (Celanease). |
The picture that he carried with him was of the 5th Marines banner. The 5th Marine Regiment
was a regiment of the 1st Marine Division. His unit in Korea was 3rd Battalion,
5th Marines, H Company. |
